December 4, 2011 in Uncategorized

If you are new to gardening, there are certain mistakes that you should be careful not to make. If you perhaps mess up, you do not have to feel as if it is a fiasco, as you can generally fix things immediately or even during the following season. Yet, similar to the muddles we will be talking about in this article, if you do some research and plan ahead, you should be able to skirt a lot of the mistakes, even as an amateur gardener.

Plants have space requirements that they need in order to grow and be healthy. When you are deciding which plants you want to grow, find out how much room each variety requires so you can choose a proper location. When you your bedding plants, their small size can be deceptive and it’s easy to misjudge exactly how much room they will require when full grown. Problems can then occur later on as the roots spread, and two or more different species start to get tangled up. Don’t try to cram a bunch of different plants into your garden if your space is restricted. Plant just a few varieties or research container gardening if you want more plants. Strawberries and herbs, for example, flourish well in containers. Any seed packet or plant that you buy will tell you how much space is required, and you should always follow these recommendations.

Obviously, water is important to successful plant growth. Even though this is common knowledge, this is an area that a lot of gardeners get wrong. What most gardeners don’t realize is that different species have different water requirements. You need to keep the plants separated according to how they should be watered. Another thing to keep in mind is your local climate conditions. How much rain will you be getting and what is the climate like at the time your garden will be growing? How often you need to water will be determined by these factors. A simple gadget called a soil tester can help you accurately judge the moisture content of your soil. You will accurately know when your plants are ready for their next watering. Also, realize that plants don’t like to sit in puddles of water. They like their soil to be moist, not saturated. You can water too much and this can be as damaging to your plants as not watering enough.

What is your soil like? You should find out before you even start because if your soil is poor quality you may have a non-productive garden. When your soil is healthy, your plants will also be healthy. You need to know if your soil is acid or alkaline (the pH of your soil) before you even plant your garden. Gardening center, or just about any store that sells seeds and flats of plants in the spring, will have pH Test Kits. If your soil is not healthy, you can either add fertilizer to it or purchase good soil at your local nursery. After your garden is in place, compost or fertilize it on a regular basis to replace any nutrients lost through watering or plant growth. When you take a knowledgeable approach to gardening, you will be able to stay away from some of these detrimental issues. If you are not sure about the care requirements of any of your plants, it is not wise to speculate. If you have any sort of indecision, you have many places you can seek out the information you need, via the internet or your local nursery. Each and every plant has distinct care requirements that are individual to their variety.
